FAQ for Applications

Please read all of the rules, as well as the FAQ before applying to the game

What type of RP is this?

Player-driven, with an over-arching plot that will sometimes affect the day-to-day storylines and where you can do almost anything you like. It will be fairly unstructured, with occasional plotbunnies injected for fun. We know that our players will be interested in all forms of storylines, from dark to light and fluffy, and we don't intend to limit what direction your character can take.

So what sort of storylines are you looking for? World-hopping? Interpersonal?

Mainly interpersonal - characters are incapable of world-hopping (otherwise, they wouldn't be properly protected), but there are plenty of directions to take your character once he or she arrives here.

Are characters required to be human?

No. The only current requirement for characters is that they be published somewhere we can verify, and fully sentient.

What sorts of characters can I use?

If they've been published in any format (television, books, movies, videogames, etc.) from any genre, where many people can read/watch them, they are fair game. Original Characters (OCs) are NOT allowed.

Can there be multiple versions of the same character?

No. Once the character is taken, find another. It doesn't matter how many different sources there are for the character. This applies, even if the sources are wildly different or unconnected. For example, since we have Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7 in the game, you can't apply for Sephiroth from Kingdom Hearts. So sorry.

Can we specify a particular point in our character's canon for them to be taken to the Haven?

Yes. In some instances, the series may not be over, or it may simply not be reasonable to take them at the very end of their canon, so this option is open for all characters. You can take a character from any point in their canon, up to and including the instant before their death.

Does our IC Sample have to be 500 words exactly? What if I want to write less/more?

No, it doesn't. We aren't going to call you out for something like having 497 words or anything like that. What we're looking for is a good, honest, energetic effort. That's all. The word count is there as a kind of guideline - something solid for those people who like specifics. We don't count words, but we will be able to tell if you gave it a good try, or if you just said "eh, whatever" and threw a few words together without care.

This also applies to your background paragraphs. We ask for three because we don't want the background to be overwhelming, and you don't have to include EVERY detail. However, some characters have a LOT of backstory, and it just doesn't make sense without including a great deal of it. We're not going to penalize you for making the backstory longer. On the other hand, if you just whip off one paragraph, that may count against you, since it'll seem that you don't know much or don't care.

So... if the IC sample doesn't have to be 500 words, what's the minimum?

Well, there is no specific minimum. We had one application that was less than 200 words, but demonstrated an honest effort and true understanding of the character and how to play him. We will likely have at least one application somewhere along the lines that is 600-700 words, just because some people naturally write lengthier passages. Just show us you can do it - do your best and write something you're proud of.

What happens after I am approved?

Your character wakes up in Multiverse Haven. He or she already has a job, a place to live, and some money in the bank. The Powers That Be have provided your character with a letter that explains what has happened to them, in a basic sense. What your character does with that is up to you. After you are approved, you will receive an email telling you where in the city you live and what your job is. This email is the general gist of the letter that the character receives, though the Powers have added the additional note that if you want to know more, your character should go to the library and obtain an orientation packet.

What's the first thing I should read when I join the game?

The Guide for New Players. After that, it would be useful for you to go into the archives and read some of the logs, if you haven't already. This will help you to get a sense of how the game goes and what's happened recently. Obviously, no one can expect you to read everything back to the beginning of July 2005, which is why the Orientation Packet and Guide have been created.
